NHHS Piano Fundraiser Launches!

May 15, 2017

Part of the mission of Newport Choirs is to begin promoting quality choral music throughout the local Newport Beach community. Aside from this, we want our singers to experience learning proper musical techniques, choral literature, musicianship, and having the opportunity to make memorable performance experiences.

"Currently, our piano struggles to maintain its tuning and the cost to keep it in tune is rising."

When our home theatre, the Robert B. Wentz Theatre, was completed it showcased a large seating capacity (500 seats), a new stage, up to date sound and lighting technology, and other amenities that go hand in hand with the typical performing arts center stage. Some items from the "old" theatre were returned to the stage for continued use such as our current Bechstein piano. This piano has been a part of our district for over 30 years and has aided performers in some spectacular performances. However, as with any instrument, there is always going to be some sort of wear and tear.

"While we have a larger theatre and a new stage, we unfortunately did not get the amenities of a new instrument or new choral risers"

Currently, our piano struggles to maintain its tuning and the cost to keep it in tune is rising. Our pianos' lid has also been damaged and cannot be raised as it will fall off. Several of the keys have cracked and the pedals are beginning to come loose. Cosmetically, our piano shows lots of surface damage (remember it has been hauled around for several years), and can be seen by patrons in the audience. For such a nicely re-built theatre we are not using the best instrument to showcase our ensembles.

"Some may think, 'Oh it's just a piano,' but that is simply not the case."

Our counterparts at the other high school in our city put in all new choral risers and a new Yamaha piano when their stage was re-built three years ago. While we have a larger theatre and a new stage, we unfortunately did not get the amenities of a new instrument or new choral risers. This is where Newport Choirs have begun to push for a change. Having a decent, useable, and study instrument is the core of our performances (when they require accompaniment) as well as for other ensembles or groups who use it for their own concerts and rehearsals (drama, orchestra, etc.). This ranges from our own NHHS programs, to Newport Zone schools as well as other district music programs that use our theatre throughout the year. In reaction to this, Mr. Ledón and the members of Newport Choirs will be starting the "#NHHSPianoFundraiser" to raise enough money to be able to buy an upgraded instrument that can last us for another 30+ years.

This fundraiser is not your typical experience and will actually come with some performance friendly benefits:

Tier 1 Donors (Directors' circle):

Patrons who are willing to donate $350+ will be able to "sponsor" 1 of the 88 keys on our new piano. These patrons will also receive the following:

  • Family name engraved on the official "NHHS Piano Fundraiser" plaque along with their sponsored piano key which will be displayed in the lobby of the Robert B. Wentz theatre.

  • Two (2) complimentary tickets with reserved seating for the entire 2017-2018 Newport Choirs choral season (four concerts total). Patrons will be able to select their seats upon donation.

  • Newport Choirs lapel pin.

  • Family name mentioned in Newport Choirs' Chorister concert choral program donors list.

Tier 2 Donors (Section Leaders):

Patrons who are willing to donate $200+ towards the purchase of our new piano will receive the following:

  • Two (2) complimentary tickets for any two shows of the 2017-2018 Newport Choirs choral season.

  • Newport Choirs lapel pin.

  • Family name mentioned in Newport Choirs' Chorister concert choral program donors list.

Tier 3 Donors (Honorary Choral Members):

Patrons who are willing to donate $100+ towards the purchase of our new piano will receive the following:

  • Newport Choirs lapel pin.

  • Family name mentioned in Newport Choirs' Chorister concert choral program donors list.

Our current goal is to raise $40,000 to help with the purchase of a new piano. Any exceeding funds will be used to purchase a new upright rehearsal piano for our blackbox theatre which gets used as both a rehearsal and performance stage.

All donations to make this dream a reality are welcome! As we strive to bring back an art, that once used to be the strong point of Newport Harbor High School, we need your help to get there. With a new instrument we can continue to promote and develop quality musical programming that will showcase students' talent along with a streamlined performance. This will not be solely an instrument of the students at Newport Harbor, but also something that will be benefitted by students district-wide in Newport-Mesa. Some may think, "Oh it's just a piano," but that is simply not the case. A long-lasting piano is an essential tool to any performing arts ensemble, and adds to the development of memorable performing experiences for our students and patrons.

Ready to donate? Contact jledon@nmusd.us with any questions you may have and to secure your donor "perks" with your donation. Checks can be made out to "NMUSD" with "NHHS Piano Fundraiser" in the memo line. We will have an information booth where student representatives can answer any questions you may have at our Evening of the Arts event on May 24, 2017 from 6 - 9 PM at Newport Harbor High School. The next "booth" opportunity will take place during the Newport Choirs "Road Trip Through America - Pop Show" on Thursday, June 1 at 7 PM. Thank you for helping us make this a reality for the students of the Newport Harbor Zone.
